Grupo Capoeira Brasil is an international organization whose interaction between members around the world is rooted in respect and honor of the rich tradition and history of Capoeira and for our Mestres who perpetuate these ideals.

We practice a variation of Capoeira titled Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. Our style, derived from the movements and sequences defined by Mestre Bimba, reflect the evolutions and influences of the Mestres of Grupo Capoeira Brasil. We strive to maintain the integrity of the art, as well as support its evolution.

On January 14th, 1989 in Rio de Janeiro, Grupo Capoeira Brasil was founded by (pictured from left to right) Mestres Boneco, Paulinho Sabiá, and Paulão. The inauguration, sponsored by a council of legendary mestres from various organizations, began an amazing capoeira dynasty, which today is one of the largest in the world. The "padrinhos," or godfathers of Grupo Capoeira Brasil include Mestres Suassuna, Itapoan, Peixinho, and the late Ezekiel. Since its founding, Grupo Capoeira Brasil has grown internationally with centers and academies in San Antonio, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, St. Louis, Gainesville, Houston, Boston, Fresno, Denver, Miami, Amsterdam, Sydney, Paris, Marseille, and all over Brazil.Visit our Cord System's page for our group's ranking structure.

The San Antonio chapter of Grupo Capoeira Brasil was founded by Mestre Jelon Vieira in 1993 in conjunction with Ilê Bahia de San Antonio, a non-profit organization also founded by Mestre Jelon, dedicated to teaching the African-Brazilian arts to the local San Antonio community with a special emphasis on at-risk youth. For 11 years, Grupo Capoeira Brasil of San Antonio has taught capoeira at the highest levels, under the direction of Instructor Esquilo Preto. We teach after school children's programs at many of San Anotnio's east side elemantary schools. Our group has been involved in performances for such organizations as ESPN's X-GAMES and Sports Illustrated magazine. Each year we demonstrate our art form at every major San Antonio cultural festival. Our group is growing larger every day, and we welcome all who are interested in trying capoeira. Visit our class schedule page for more information on our class times, locations, and rates.
